The Silence fragile of Extinction,(November 2024)

In a world shrouded in sorrow, this artwork invites you to confront the devastating biodiversity crisis threatening our planet. Here, a stark truth emerges: extinction rates have skyrocketed to 1,000 and even 10,000 times beyond natural levels, with 200 to 2,000 species vanishing each year, a grief that echoes through time.

This installation serves as a tribute to just 100 of the many species who have gone extinct in the last decade. Each fluttering white flag symbolises not just one life lost, but the extinction of an entire species, while the flickering flames honour their fleeting presence on earth. Drawing inspiration from Indian traditions, this ritual embodies the essence of remembrance and reflection.

As you approach this immersive experience, al low the profound stillness to envelop you. Listen to the gentle whispers of the wind and the soothing trickle of water—messengers carrying the tales of those other species that once shared a planet with us.

This installation setup was specifically designed to keep these plants alive in an ideally protected environment with everything they need to survive. There are certain external conditions needed in their Habitat to keep the regular Oxygen Carbon cycle flow. The research says, Chlorophytum comosum is very resilient and can survive up to 3 degrees centigrade while Cissus striata can survive up to 5 degrees centigrade.

The average ideal temperature for them would be 18 degrees centigrade as both species originated in the tropics. To maintain this temperature cycle in the controlled habitable environment, ‘the projector’ is used as an instrument. The temperature of the projector can rise up to 35 degrees centigrade when in use. This heat is essential for the plants to keep their oxygen-carbon cycle flow going as they would do in their natural habitat.

At the moment, a research is going on about the function of white light in the process of photosynthesis. So far, the current white light isn’t ideal for this function but in the future, the plants will be able to slowly adapt to the existing conditions as they always did, the research says.

This is an imaginary exchange of dialogue in between the two water bodies which were, and still are probably connected as a part of the same planet. This installation reflects of the videos of the mangroves in the water that is collected from the Rhine river. Sunderban’s (Situated in east India) is the largest River Delta and mangroves in the world with more than 10,000 sq. kms of area. It is currently a Red listed ecosystem where many species are decreasing with each decade. Hence this artwork invites the audience to interact, feel and touch the water of Rhine river, while bringing together the memories through audio-visual from the distant mangrove forest.
